Matthew's Bible 1537

Let the prestes serue the Lorde betwixte the porche & the aulter, weping and saying: be fauourable (O Lorde) be fauourable vnto thy people: let not thyne herytage be broughte to suche confusyon, leste the Heathen be Lordes therof. Wherfore shulde they saye amonge the Heathen: where is nowe theyr God?

And so he broughte me into the inward court of the Lordes house: and beholde at the porte of the Lordes house, betwyxte the fore entrye and the aulter, there were fyue and twentye men, that turned theyr backes vpon the temple of the Lorde, and theyr faces towarde the east & these worshipped the sonne.

O God, how long shall the aduersary do this dishonoure? how longe shall the enemy blaspheme thy name? for euer?

My teares are my meate daye and nighte whyle it is daylye sayed vnto me: where is now thy God?

then wyll I plucke them vp by the rotes oute of my lande which I haue geuen them, & wyll cast thys house which I haue sanctyfyed for my name out of my syght, & wyll make a prouerbe & a tale of it amonge all nacyons.

then I wyll weede Israel oute of the lande whiche I haue geuen them. And this house which I haue halowed for my name, I wyll put out of my syghte, And Israell shall be a prouerbe and a fable vnto all nacyons.

And thou shalt go to waste & be made an ensample, & a iestynge stocke vnto all nacyons whether the Lord shall carye the.

And behold, one of the children of Israell came & broughte vnto hys brethren, a Madianitish wyfe euen in the syght of Moses & in the sighte of al the multitude of the children of Israel, as they were weppyng in the dore of the tabernacle of wytnes.

And at the same tyme shall the Lorde of Hostes call men to wepinge, mourninge, to baldnesse & puttynge on of sacke clothe.

Moreouer the Cananites, and all the inhabyters of the Lande shall heare of it, and shall come about vs, and destroye the name of vs out of the world. And then what wilt thou do vnto thy myghtye name.

Now when I thincke ther vpon, I poure out my hert by my self: for I would faine go hence wyth the multytude and passe ouer wt them vnto the house of God, in the voyce of prayse and thankes geuynge, amonge suche as kepe holy daye.

Why art thou so heuy (O my soule) & why art thou so disquieted within me? O put thy trust in God, for I wyll yet thanke hym for the helpe of hys countenaunce, and because he is my God.
