Joel 2:13

Matthew's Bible 1537

rente your hertes & not youre clothes. Turne you vnto the Lorde youre God, for he is gracyons and mercyfull, longe sufferyng and of great compassyon, & ready to pardone wickednes.

But thou, O Lord God, art ful of compassion, and mercy, long suffring, great in goodnes and truth.

The Lorde is nye vnto them that are contryte in hert, and will helpe suche as be of an humble sprete.

For thus sayeth the hye and excellent, euen he that dwelleth in euerlastingnesse, whose name is the holy one. I dwell hye aboue & in the sanctuary, and with him also, that is of a contrite & humble spirite: that I maye heale a troubled mind, & a contrite hert.

Where is there such a God as thou? that pardonest wickednes, and forgeuest the offences of the remnaunte of thyne herytage? He kepeth not hys wrath for euer. And why? his delyte is to haue compassyon:

For thou Lorde arte good and gracyous, and of greate mercye vnto all them that call vpon the.

The Lord is ful of compassion and mercy, long sufferyng, & of great goodnesse.

And he prayed vnto the Lord, & sayde: O Lord was not thys my sayinge (I praye the) when I was yet in my countre? therfore I hasted rather to fle vnto Tharsis, for I know well ynough that thou art a mercyfull God, full of compassion, long sufferyng, & of a great kyndnesse, & repentest when thou shuldest take punishment.

As for these thynges, my hande had made them all, and they are all created, sayeth the Lorde. Whyche of them shall I then regarde? Euen hym, that is of a lowly troubled spyryte, and standeth in awe of my wordes.

Then Dauid toke hys clothes and rente them, and so dyd all the men that were wyth hym.

Eyther despysest thou the riches of hys goodnes, pacience and longe sufferaunce? and remembreste not howe that the kindnes of God leadeth the to repentaunce?

The sacryfice of God is a troubled spirit a broken and a contrite hert, O God, shalte thou not despyse.

Because thyne hert dyd melt, and thou mekedest thy selfe before me the Lorde, when thou heardest what I spake agaynst thys place, and the enhabiters of the same, howe that it shoulde be destroyed and made acursed, and tarest thy clothes and weptest before me: of that also I haue hearde sayth the Lorde.

But God whiche is ryche in mercye thorow his great loue wherewith he loued vs,

He thought vpon hys couenaunt, and pytyed them, accordyng vnto the multytude of hys mercyes.

Then Iob stode vp, and rente hys clothes shaued his heade, fell doune vpon the ground, worshipped,

the Lord is longe year he be angrye, and ful of mercy, and suffereth synne and trespace, and leaueth no man innocent, and vysyteth the vnrighteousnesse of the fathers vpon the chyldren, euen vpon the thyrd and fourth generacion,

and refused to heare, and were not myndefull of the wonders that thou dyddeste for them: but became obstynate & heady in so muche that they turned backe to theyr bondage in theyr disobedience. But thou my God forgauest, and wast gracyous, mercyfull, pacyente, and of greate goodnesse, and forsokest them not.

For bodely exercyse profyteth lytell: But godlynes is good vnto all thynges, as a thynge whiche hath promyses of the lyfe that is now, and of the lyfe to come.

The Lorde suffreth longe, he is of greate power, & so innocent that he leaueth no man fautlesse before hym. The Lorde goeth forth in tempest and stormy wether, the cloudes are the dust of his fete.

and the Lorde sayde vnto hym: Go thy waye thorow the cytie of Ierusalem, and set thys marcke Than vpon the foreheades of them, that mourne & are sory for all the abhomynacyons, that be done therin.

When the kyng heard the wordes of the women, he rent hys clothes euen as he was walkyng on the walles. And when the people loked vpon him: se, he was clothed in sacke vnder.

And when the kinge of Israell had reade the letter, he rent hys clothes & sayed: am I God to sley and to make aliue? that he should sende to me, for to delyuer a man from his leprosye. But consyder I praye you and se, howe he piked quarels with me.

When Ahab hearde those wordes, he rent his clothes and put sackecloth about his flesh, and fasted, and laye in sack, and went confortlesse.

And Iacob rent hys cloothes, and put sacke cloth about hys loynes, and sorowed for hys sonne a longe season.

And when Ruben came agayne vnto the pyt and found not Ioseph there, he rent hys cloothes

Thyncke ye this fast pleaseth me, that a man shoulde chasten him self for a daye, and to writhe his head aboute lyke an hoke in an hearry cloth, and to lye vpon the earth? Shoulde that be called fasting, or a daye that pleaseth the Lord.

And the kynge as sone as he had hearde, the wordes of the boke of the lawe, he rent hys clothes

there came certayne men from Sichem, from Siloh and Samaria, to the nombre of .lxxx. whiche had shauen their beardes, rent their clothes, and were al heauy, bringyng meatofferynges, and incense in their handes, to offre it in the house of the Lord.

Yf ye will dwell in this lande, I shall buylde you vp, and not breake you doune: I shall plante you, and not rote you out: for I am pacified, as concernynge the trouble that I haue done to you.

O Israel, turne the nowe, vnto the Lorde thy God, for thou hast taken a greate fall thorow thy wickednes.

then heare thou from heauen, and be mercyfull vnto the synne of thy seruauntes, & of thy people Israel, that thou shewe them a good waye to walke in, and sende rayne vpon thy lande whiche thou haste geuen vnto thy people, for an enherytaunce.

Peraduenture they will praye mekely before the face of the Lord, and turne euery one from his wicked waie. For greate is the wrath and displeasure, that the Lorde hath taken agaynst this people.

Who can tell? God maye turne, & repente & cease from his fearce wrath, that we perish not.
