And Eliah came vnto all the people and sayde: why halte ye betwene two opinions? Yf the Lorde be very God, folowe him: or yf Baal be he, then folowe hym. And the people answered him not one worde.
No man can serue two maysters. For eyther he shall hate the one & loue the other: yea or eles he shall leane to the one & dispise the other. Ye cannot serue God & Mammon.
Therfor thus sayth the Lord: For so much as thys people draweth nye me with theyr mouthe, and prayseth me hyghlye wyth theyr lyppes (where as theyr herte neuerthelesse is farre from me, & the feare which they owe vnto me, that turne they to mens lawes and doctrynes)
hauinge eyes full of aduoutrye, and that can not cease to synne, begilinge vnstable soules. Hertes they haue exercised with couetousues. They are cursed children,
And euen so dyd these nacions feare the Lorde & serue theyr ymages therto: & so dyd their children & theyr chyldrens children to. Euen as dyd theyr fathers, so do they vnto this daye.
yea, almoste in euery epistle speakinge of such thinges, amonge whiche are manye thinges harde to be vnderstande, which they that are vnlearned, and vnstable, peruert, as they do other scriptures vnto their owne destruccion.
