Matthew's Bible 1537

The Lordes aduersaryes shall be made to feare hym: and out of heauen he shal thunder vpon them. The Lorde shall iudge the endes of the worlde, and shall geue myght vnto his Kynge, and exalte the horne of his anoynted.

And as Samuel offered the burntofferyng, the Philistines came to fyght agaynst Israel. But the Lorde thundered a great thunder that same daye vpon the Philistines, & turmoyled them, that they were beaten before Israel.

Moreouer those myne enemyes which woulde not that I should raigne ouer them, brynge hyther, and slea them before me.

And Iesus came and spake vnto them saiynge: all power is geuen vnto me in heauen and in earth.

For God shal iudge all workes and secrete thynges, whether they be good or euell.

Be glad then (O thou yong man) in thy youth, and let thine herte be mery in thy yonge daies: folowe the wayes of thine owne herte, and the luste of thyne eyes: but be thou sure, that God shall brynge the into iudgement for all these thinges.

Thou hast loued righteousnesse, & hated iniquitie: wherfore God (which is thy God) hath anoynted the with the oyle of gladnes aboue thy felowes.

To the chaunter, a Psalme of Dauid. Lorde, how ioyfull is the kyng in thy strength? O how exceadyng glad is he of thy sauynge health?

Yet haue I sette my kyng vpon my holy hyll of syon.

The kynges of the earth stande vp, and the rulers are come to gether, agaynste the Lorde and agaynste hys anoynted.

So perysh all thyne enemyes Lord: but they that loue the, let them be as the sunne rysyng in his might. And the lande had reste fourthye yeares.

For we muste all appeare before the iudgement seate of Christ, that euery man maye receyue the workes of hys bodye accordyng to that he hath done, whether it be good or badde?

howe God had annoynted Iesus of Nazareth wyth the holy ghost, and wyth power. Whiche Iesus went about doynge good, and healinge all that were oppressed of the deuils for God was wyth him.

For of a trueth againste thy holy childe Iesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herode and also Poncius Pilate, with the Gentyls & the people of Israel, gathered them selues together,

And hath reysed vp an horne of saluacion vnto vs in the house of his seruaunt Dauid.

Then shal the kinge saye to them on his right hand. Come ye blessed chyldren of my father, enheryte ye the kingdome prepared for you from the begynninge of the worlde.

sayinge: Verelye in the Lorde is my ryghtuousnes and strength. To hym shall men come: but all they that thyncke scorne of hym, shalbe confounded.

Beholde, the kynge shal gouerne after the rule of ryghtuousnes, & the princes shal rule according to the balaunce of equyte.

He exalteth the horne of his people, all hys saynctes shall prayse hym, the chyldren of Israell, euen the people that serueth him. Prayse the euerlastyng.

For thou art the glory of their strength, & thorow thy fauoure shalt thou lyfte vp oure hornes.

The Lord is the strength of his people, he is the defender and Sauioure of his anoynted.

Is thyne arme then lyke the arme of God? Maketh thy voyce such a sound as hys doeth?

The Lorde thundred from heauen, and the most hye put out his voyce.

And he shal buylde an house for my name, & I wyll stablyshe the seate of hys kyngdome for euer:

Now therfore so saye vnto my seruaunt Dauid, thus sayth the Lord of Hostes I toke the out of a shepeherdes cote from folowyng shepe to be a ruler ouer my people Israel.

And then the Lorde sayde vnto Samuel: How longe wilt thou mourne for Saul, seing I haue cast him away from raygning ouer Israel? fyll an horne with oyntment, and come: I wil sende the to Isay the Bethlehemite, for I haue spyed me a king amonge his sonnes.

Then Samuel saide: the Lorde hath rente the Kyngdome of Israel from the this daye, and hath geuen it to a neyghbour of thyne, that is better then thou.

And when Samuel called vnto the Lorde, the Lorde sent thunder & rayne the same daye. And all the people feared the Lord and Samuel excedynglye.

Now therfore beholde, the kynge whome ye haue chosen and whome ye haue desyred: se, the Lorde hath geuen you a Kynge,

Behold here I am: answere me before the Lorde & before his annoynted, whose oxe haue I taken? or whose asse haue I taken? whom haue I done wrong to? or whom haue I pylled? And of whose hand haue I receiued any bribe, to blynde myne eyes therewith? & I wyll restore it you agayne.

Thou shalte be vysyted of the Lorde of hostes with thondre, earthequake, & wyth a greate crack, with the whyrle wynde, tempeste, & with the flamme of a consumynge fyre.

At the same tyme wyll I cause the horne of the house of Israell to growe forthe, & open thy mouth agayne amonge them: that they maye knowe, howe that I am the Lorde.

is it not now wheteheruest. And yet for al that, I wyl call vnto the Lorde, and he shall sende thunder and rayne. Wherby perceyue and vnderstand how that your wyckednes is great which ye haue done in the syght of the Lorde in askyng you a Kynge.

Some put their trust in charettes, & some in horses: but we will remembre the name of the Lorde oure God.

I will set hys hande in the sea, & his right hande in the floudes.

Ther shall I make the horne of Dauid to floryshe, I haue ordeyned a lanterne for myne anoynted.
