This is the rejoicing city that dwelt without a care, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none besides me: how she has become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one who passes by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

And I will make this city desolate, and a hissing; every one that passes by it shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one who goes by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.

How the city sits solitary that was full of people! how she has become like a widow! She who was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how she has become one who pays tribute!

How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and thrown down from heaven to the earth the beauty of Israel, and not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger!

All that pass by clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

The merchants among the people shall hiss at you; you shall be a terror, and never shall be any more.

Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord GOD; Because your heart is lifted up, and you have said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet you are a man, and not God, though you set your heart as the heart of God:

Will you yet say before him who slays you, I am God? but you shall be a man, and no God, in the hand of him who slays you.

Speak, and say, Thus says the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon who lies in the midst of his rivers, who has said, My river is my own, and I have made it for myself.

Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; perhaps there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.

There is no healing of your bruise; your wound is severe: all that hear the report of you shall clap their hands over you: for upon whom has not your wickedness passed continually?

They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed from themselves.

And those who passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
