And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at my hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonor that magnify themselves against me.
My tongue also shall talk of your righteousness all the day long: for they are brought into perplexity, for they are brought to shame, that seek my hurt.
Because your rage against me, and your tumult, has come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.
Why have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and have fled quickly, and look not back: for fear was round about, says the LORD.
And will you pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies?
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the hiding places where he hides himself, and come again to me with the report, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
