Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had awakened, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.

Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem:

And they said to me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

Then said I to them, You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no longer a reproach.

And said to the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchers, lies waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is becoming exhausted, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

And he spoke before his kindred and the army of Samaria, and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they finish in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

So we built the wall; and all the wall was repaired even to the half of it: for the people had a mind to work.

It is time for you, LORD, to work: for they have made void your law.

​O God, the heathen have come into your inheritance; your holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem in heaps of ruins.

For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cling to the house of Jacob.

Speak kindly to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she has received from the LORD’S hand double for all her sins.

For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

For thus says the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

Thus says the LORD; Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have mercy on his dwelling places; and the city shall be built upon her own mound, and the palace shall remain according to its usual manner.

O Lord, according to all your righteousness, I plead with you, let your anger and your fury be turned away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become a reproach to all who are around us.

Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
