All the men of your confederacy have brought you even to the border: the men who were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you; those who eat your bread have prepared to wound you from beneath: there is no understanding in him.

And when you are laid waste, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, though you tear your face with painting, in vain shall you make yourself fair; your lovers will despise you, they will seek your life.

Concerning Edom, thus says the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? has counsel perished from the prudent? has their wisdom vanished?

I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and my elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their food to relieve their souls.

The sorrows of a woman in birth labor shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not remain long in the opening of the womb during birth.

Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.

I do not speak of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.
