And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there had come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and became greatly upset, and mocked the Jews.

In which was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews think to rebel: for which reason you build the wall, that you may be their king, according to these words.

For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those who are round about us.

You make us a strife to our neighbors: and our enemies laugh among themselves.

Bring us back, O God of hosts, and cause your face to shine; and we shall be saved.

You say, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?

For since I spoke, I cried out, I cried violence and plunder; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach to me, and a derision, daily.

Then Ishmael took away captive all the rest of the people that were in Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites.

He said to them, Depart: for the maid is not dead, but is sleeping. And they laughed him to scorn.

And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he took the father and the mother of the girl, and those who were with him, and entered in where the girl was lying.

And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

And from that time on Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar’s friend: whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.

For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

And others had trials of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
