When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there had come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;

And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied with Tobiah:

But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that you do? will you rebel against the king?

But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were built up, and that the broken places began to be filled in, then they were very angry,

Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no broken place left in it; (though at that time I had not set up the doors on the gates;)

And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard of it, and all the heathen that were around us saw these things, they were brought very low in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was done by our God.

For Mordecai the Jew was next to king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted by the multitude of his kindred, seeking the prosperity of his people, and speaking peace to all his people.

The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Wrath is cruel, and anger is overflowing; but who is able to stand before envy?

For a servant when he reigns; and a fool when he is filled with food;

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall flee to Zoar, a heifer of three years old: for by the ascent of Luhith with weeping shall they go up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall lift up a cry of destruction.

Then Ishmael took away captive all the rest of the people that were in Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites.

From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh, and even to Jahaz, have they spoken their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim, like a heifer three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate.

For in the ascent of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the descent of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.

Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they were perplexed concerning them where this would lead.
