Be it known now to the king, that, if this city be built, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so you shall hurt the revenue of the kings.

Also we inform you, that concerning any of the priests and Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.

There were also some that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute on our lands and vineyards.

And it yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

For you deceived in your hearts, when you sent me to the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us to the LORD our God; and according to all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare to us, and we will do it.

He said, Yes. And when he had come into the house, Jesus met him, saying, What do you think, Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? From their own children, or from strangers?

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why do you put me to the test, you hypocrites?

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

Whom Jason has received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended anything at all.

But we desire to hear from you what you think: for concerning this sect, we know that everywhere it is spoken against.

After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away many people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were scattered.
