But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in your sight.
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his own will:
Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it did not rain on the earth for a period of three years and six months.
These have power to shut heaven, so that it does not rain in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.
