And this shall be a statute for ever to you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourns among you:

And all the men of Israel assembled themselves to king Solomon at the feast in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.

And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all of our possessions.

But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into my own bosom.

When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

And in the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, except that which every man must eat, that only may be done by you.

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates:

And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy to the LORD.

You shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defiles it shall surely be put to death: for whoever does any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whoever does any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

If you turn away your foot from the sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honorable; and shall honor him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words:

Why have we fasted, they say, and you do not see it? why have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge of it? Behold, in the day of your fast you indulge your desires, and oppress all your laborers.

Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

Then said he to me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to afflict yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come because of your words.

I ate no pleasant food, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

And you shall proclaim on the very same day, that it may be a holy convocation unto you: you shall do no common work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

Seven days you shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be a holy convocation to you; and you shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and you shall do no common work therein.

Then shall you cause the trumpet of the jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall you make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.

It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that you eat neither fat nor blood.

And you shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month a holy convocation; and you shall afflict your souls: you shall not do any work therein:

Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul advised them,

For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

For he that has entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
