The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have thrown up dust upon their heads; they have clothed themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God has put us to silence, and given us bitter water to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.

How the city sits solitary that was full of people! how she has become like a widow! She who was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how she has become one who pays tribute!

The ways of Zion mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

He sits alone and keeps silence, because he has borne it upon him.

The anger of the LORD has scattered them; he will no longer regard them: they did not respect the persons of the priests, they did not favor the elders.

Those who fed delicately are desolate in the streets: those who were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

Princes are hung up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honored.

The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music.

And shall cause their voice to be heard concerning you, and shall cry bitterly, and shall toss up dust upon their heads, they shall roll themselves in the ashes:

And they shall make themselves completely bald for you, and clothe themselves with sackcloth, and they shall weep for you with bitterness of heart and bitter wailing.

They shall also clothe themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads.

Lament like a virgin clothed with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.

And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, says the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall throw them out in silence.

For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe aside from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

And Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

And they threw dust on their heads, and cried out, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, in which all were made rich who had ships in the sea because of her magnificence! For in one hour is she made desolate.
