And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and a pint of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.

We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those who are round about us.

Therefore thus says the LORD, If you return, then will I bring you back, and you shall stand before me: and if you take away the precious from the vile, you shall be as my mouth: let them return to you; but do not return to them.

And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and distress with which their enemies, and those who seek their lives, shall distress them.

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have put into the dungeon; and he is likely to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.

And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was severe in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.

Jerusalem has greatly sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sighs, and turns backward.

Her filthiness is in her skirts; she does not remember her latter end; therefore she was brought down as if by a miracle: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy has magnified himself.

My eyes fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

They said to their mothers, Where is grain and wine? when they swooned like the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’ bosom.

Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom you have done this. Shall the women eat the fruit of their body, and children carried in their arms? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

Remember, O LORD, what has come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
