How the city sits solitary that was full of people! how she has become like a widow! She who was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how she has become one who pays tribute!

And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river to the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.

And Pharaoh Necho put him in bonds at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and put the land to a tribute of a hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.

And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh: he exacted the silver and the gold from the people of the land, from every one according to his taxation, to give it unto Pharaoh Necho.

And he reigned over all the kings from the river even to the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid to them.

There were also some that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute on our lands and vineyards.

And it yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, to the testimony of Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD.

How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how you are cut down to the ground, who did weaken the nations!

You that are full of commotion, a tumultuous city, a joyful city: your slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.

And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

Then shall you say in your heart, Who has begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and wandering to and fro? and who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where were they?

The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away backwards.

Shake yourself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose yourself from the bonds of your neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings, who announces peace; who brings good tidings of good, who announces salvation; who says to Zion, Your God reigns!

Fear not, for you shall not be ashamed; neither be perplexed, for you shall not be put to shame: for you shall forget the shame of your youth, and shall not remember the reproach of your widowhood any more.

For thus says the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: declare ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.

And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, Do not fear to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

And said to Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we plead with you, our supplication be accepted before you, and pray for us unto the LORD your God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes do behold us:)

Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; You have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwells in them,

Therefore my fury and my anger was poured out, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are ruined and desolate, as at this day.

How the hammer of the whole earth is cut in pieces and broken! how Babylon has become a desolation among the nations!

And I will make Jerusalem heaps of ruins, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and my elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their food to relieve their souls.

How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and thrown down from heaven to the earth the beauty of Israel, and not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger!

The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have thrown up dust upon their heads; they have clothed themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

How the gold has become dim! how the most fine gold has changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.

The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!

Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay aside their robes, and put off their embroidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble every moment, and be astonished at you.

Son of man, because Tyre has said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is broken who was the gates of the people: she is turned to me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste:

Thus says the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her.

And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savor of your sweet odors.

And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.

This is the rejoicing city that dwelt without a care, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none besides me: how she has become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one who passes by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

As much as she has glorified herself, and lived in indulgence, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
