I indeed baptize you with water for repentance: but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire:
For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, such as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such similar things you do.
And there were set there six water pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, each containing two or three measures of several gallons apiece.
It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
This represents baptism which also now saves us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the response of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
