And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken on me to speak to the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:

And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.

And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass has grown up unto the heavens.

And he took a potsherd to scrape himself with; and he sat down among the ashes.

He has thrown me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear: but now my eye sees you.

And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My anger is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

Yet shall you plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

And now consider; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:

Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

Surely after I was turned, I repented; and after I was instructed, I struck upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even astonished, because I bore the reproach of my youth.

That you may remember, and be astonished, and never open your mouth any more because of your shame, when I am pacified toward you for all that you have done, says the Lord GOD.

And there shall you remember your ways, and all your doings, in which you have been defiled; and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that you have committed.

Then shall you remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.

And those who escape of you shall remember me among the nations to which they shall be taken captives, because I am broken hearted with their whorish heart, which has departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall loathe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

And if a leprosy breaks out abroad in the skin, and the leprosy covers all the skin of him that has the plague from his head even to his foot, wherever the priest looks;

Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they would have a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

And Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
