Because it did not shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from my eyes.

Why were the knees prepared for me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

As a snail which melts, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

By you have I been held up from the womb: you are he that took me out of my mother’s body: my praise shall be continually of you.

Therefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

Yea, better is he than both of them, who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

If a man begets a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he has no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known anything: this one has more rest than the other.

Listen to me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from the belly, who have been carried from the womb:

Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent at interest, nor have men lent to me at interest; yet every one of them curses me.

Because he did not kill me from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb have been always large with me.

Give them, O LORD: what will you give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
