Those who trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

Lo, this is the man that did not make God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

The rich man’s wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, says the LORD; who say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

Turn, O backsliding children, says the LORD; for I am married to you: and I will take you, one from a city, and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

How long will you go about, O you backsliding daughter? for the LORD has created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall surround a man.

For because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you shall also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together.

Your dreadfulness has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, you who dwell in the openings in the rock, who hold the height of the hill: though you were to make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there, says the LORD.

But they did not listen, or turn their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

Thus says the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

For Israel slides back like a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them like a lamb in a large place.

Instruct those who are rich in this world, that they be not proud, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

As much as she has glorified herself, and lived in indulgence, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
