Then spoke the priests and the prophets to the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.
Yet, LORD, you know all their counsel against me to slay me: do not forgive their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from your sight, but let them be overthrown before you; deal thus with them in the time of your anger.
Then said the princes and all the people to the priests and to the prophets; This man is not worthy to die: for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.
Therefore the princes said to the king, We plead with you, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man seeks not the welfare of this people, but their hurt.
And they gave him audience until this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Take away such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
Then the men of the city said to Joash, Bring out your son, that he may die: because he has thrown down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the grove that was by it.
