And in the time of his distress he trespassed yet more against the LORD: this is that king Ahaz.

For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which struck him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.

Therefore you have forsaken your people the house of Jacob, because they are filled from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves with the children of strangers.

You are wearied with the length of your way; yet you did not say, There is no hope: you have found life for your hand; therefore you were not grieved.

What will you say when he shall punish you? for you have taught them to be captains, and as chief over you: shall not sorrows take you, as a woman in birth labor?

And if you say in your heart, Why do these things come upon me? For the greatness of your iniquity are your skirts uncovered, and your heels made bare.

Thus says the LORD to this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not restrained their feet, therefore the LORD does not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk according to our own purposes, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

O generation, see the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? a land of darkness? why do my people say, We are lords; we will come no more unto you?

Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up your voice in Bashan, and cry from the passes: for all your lovers are destroyed.

I spoke to you in your prosperity; but you said, I will not hear. This has been your manner from your youth, that you did not obey my voice.

Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the LORD your God, and have spread your ways among the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed my voice, says the LORD.

But we will certainly do whatever thing goes forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.

She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she has none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies.

The tongue of the sucking child clings to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask for bread, and no man breaks it to them.

And that which comes into your mind shall not happen at all, that you say, We will be like the heathen, like the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.

So that I do not strip her naked, and leave her as in the day that she was born, and make her like a wilderness, and make her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.

For their mother has played the harlot: she who conceived them has done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.

You have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?

But the father said to his servants, Bring out the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

And he cried out and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man sees, why does he yet hope for it?

Therefore shall you serve your enemies which the LORD shall send against you, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon your neck, until he has destroyed you.

They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations they provoked him to anger.
