O LORD God of Israel, you are righteous: for we remain yet delivered, as it is this day: behold, we are before you in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before you because of this.
For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;
Your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backsliding shall reprove you: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that you have forsaken the LORD your God, and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord GOD of hosts.
We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covers us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even until this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
The LORD said also to me in the days of Josiah the king, Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? she has gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the harlot.
Therefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall plunder them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goes out from there shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God has put us to silence, and given us bitter water to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.
Nevertheless I withdrew my hand, and acted for my name’s sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.
But I acted for my name’s sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.
And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I plead with you: by whom shall Jacob rise up again? for he is small.
I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause, and executes judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.
Were it not that I feared the anger of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves improperly, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD has not done all this.
For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall surround us, and cut off our name from the earth: and what will you do to your great name?
