So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, I am your servant and your son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.

And what will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from afar? to whom will you flee for help? and where will you leave your treasures?

And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman in birth labor: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.

Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in birth labor: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.

Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst: but you said, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

O inhabitant of Lebanon, who make your nest in the cedars, how gracious shall you be when pangs come upon you, the pain as of a woman in birth labor!

Ask now, and see whether a man labors in giving birth? why do I see every man with his hands on his loins, like a woman in birth labor, and all faces are turned to paleness?

And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Your friends have urged you on, and have prevailed against you: your feet are sunk in the mire, and they have turned away back.

And when you are laid waste, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, though you tear your face with painting, in vain shall you make yourself fair; your lovers will despise you, they will seek your life.

For I have heard a voice as of a woman in birth labor, and the anguish as of her that brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewails herself, that spreads her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.

Kerioth is taken, and the strongholds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be like the heart of a woman in her birth pangs.

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will you do at the end of it?

We have heard the fame thereof: our hands grow feeble: anguish has taken hold of us, and pain, as of a woman in birth labor.

Will you yet say before him who slays you, I am God? but you shall be a man, and no God, in the hand of him who slays you.

All these are the beginning of sorrows.

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as birth labor upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
