And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest are moved with the wind.

(But he shall have one tribe for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)

So when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.

And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus says the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon you shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon you, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon you.

Then Amaziah separated them, that is, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: therefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.

Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who came from the war,

​In the LORD I put my trust: how can you say to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

The wicked flee when no man pursues: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not trouble Ephraim.

And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and put to shame: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blighted before it is grown up.

For I will defend this city to save it for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a linden tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them when they drop their leaves: so the holy people shall be the substance thereof.

And he said, Hear now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also?

The LORD shall bring upon you, and upon your people, and upon your father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.

Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have taken evil counsel against you, saying,

Do not say, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and arrogance of heart,

O house of David, thus says the LORD; Execute justice in the morning, and deliver him who is plundered out of the hand of the oppressor, so that my fury does not go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
