Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

Therefore now hear this, you who are given to pleasures, who dwell without care, who say in your heart, I am, and none other besides me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:

For this clothe yourself with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us.

Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste: cry, you daughters of Rabbah, clothe yourselves with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.

O daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and roll in ashes: make mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the plunderer shall suddenly come upon us.

So that I do not strip her naked, and leave her as in the day that she was born, and make her like a wilderness, and make her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.

Lament like a virgin clothed with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel: and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel.

This is the rejoicing city that dwelt without a care, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none besides me: how she has become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one who passes by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

Therefore shall you serve your enemies which the LORD shall send against you, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon your neck, until he has destroyed you.

You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and in luxury; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
