Isaiah 31:1

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help; and rely on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

And they brought their cattle to Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.

And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him, Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the LORD your God, therefore is the army of the king of Syria escaped out of your hand.

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein you have done foolishly: therefore from this time on you shall have wars.

Will you trust him, because his strength is great? or will you leave your labor to him?

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:

And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.

You made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but you have not looked to the maker of it, neither had respect to him that fashioned it long ago.

But you said, No; for we will flee on horses; therefore shall you flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall those who pursue you be swift.

Lo, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

How then will you turn away the face of one captain from the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

And you went to the king with ointment, and increased your perfumes, and sent your messengers far off, and debased yourself even unto hell.

And there is none that calls upon your name, that stirs himself up to take hold of you: for you have hid your face from us, and have consumed us, because of our iniquities.

The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

For the people do not turn to him that strikes them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.

Thus says the LORD; Cursed be the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from the LORD.

For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and dug out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall you say to the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come out to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger for bread; and there will we dwell:

But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape who does such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?

And it shall be no more the confidence of the house of Israel, bringing their iniquity to remembrance, when they shall look to them: but they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.

As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil has come upon us: yet we did not make our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand your truth.

He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.

I will not execute the fierceness of my anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of you: and I will not enter into the city.

Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, You are our gods: for in you the fatherless finds mercy.

They are all hot like an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them who calls to me.

Are you not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, you have ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, you have established them for correction.

God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.

And they shall be like mighty men, who tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses shall be put to shame.

But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: considering that the LORD has said to you, You shall henceforth return no more that way.

When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, and chariots, and a people more than you, be not afraid of them: for the LORD your God is with you, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
