For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah the support and the staff, the whole provision of bread, and the whole provision of water,
Moreover the LORD says, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched out necks and wanton eyes, walking and swaying as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:
But Rab-shakeh said, Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you?
Therefore my people have gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.
Thus says your Lord the LORD, and your God who pleads the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; you shall no more drink it again:
And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have put into the dungeon; and he is likely to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.
For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, till he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
Son of man, when the land sins against me by trespassing greatly, then will I stretch out my hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and you shall eat, and not be satisfied.
