Without me they shall be brought down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy for wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks;
Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor build a siege mound against it.
Then the angel of the LORD went out, and struck down in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
If I go out into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold those who are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they do not know.
Thus says the LORD, He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a possession, and shall live.
How the city sits solitary that was full of people! how she has become like a widow! She who was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how she has become one who pays tribute!
Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom you have done this. Shall the women eat the fruit of their body, and children carried in their arms? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?
This is the rejoicing city that dwelt without a care, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none besides me: how she has become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one who passes by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.
