I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baal-peor, and separated themselves to that shame; and their abominations were according to their love.

And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Eth-baal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshiped him.

And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD took away before them; and did wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger:

Those who make them are like them; so is every one that trusts in them.

So I gave them up to their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

Who is this that comes out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?

And the glorious beauty which is at the head of the fat valley shall be a fading flower, and as the early fruit before the summer; which when he that looks upon it sees it, while it is yet in his hand he eats it up.

For according to the number of your cities were your gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have you set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal.

One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very evil figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.

For shame has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covers us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even until this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

Thus says the LORD, The people who were left by the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will you do at the end of it?

But they rebelled against me, and would not listen to me: they did not every man put away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to carry out my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

And I will give her her vineyards from there, and the valley of Achor as a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for they themselves go away with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people who do not understand shall fall.

Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers love with shame, saying Give ye.

And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and announce the free offerings: for this pleases you, O you children of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grape gleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the first ripe fruit.

And it shall be to you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that you do not seek after your own heart and your own eyes, which you use after their inclination to go a whoring:

And whatever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring unto the LORD, shall be yours; every one that is clean in your house shall eat of it.

What fruit did you have then in those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

They sacrificed to devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD your God has destroyed them from among you.

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he has thrown down his altar.
