But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing: I pray you, go in to my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me about things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands give me a command.

Then you shall call, and the LORD shall answer; you shall cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias: for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were now well advanced in years.

And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a man child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant you your petition that you have asked of him.

And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

For this child I prayed; and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him:
