Be it known now to the king, that, if this city be built, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so you shall hurt the revenue of the kings.
Now because we have support from the king’s palace, and it was not proper for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore have we sent and informed the king;
There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid to them.
Also we inform you, that concerning any of the priests and Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.
He said, Yes. And when he had come into the house, Jesus met him, saying, What do you think, Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? From their own children, or from strangers?
And as Jesus passed away from there, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the place of collecting taxes: and he said to him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
