Now there cried out a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets to Elisha, saying, Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor has come to take to himself my two sons to be slaves.
Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said to them, You require interest, every one from his brother. And I called a great assembly against them.
Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent at interest, nor have men lent to me at interest; yet every one of them curses me.
Has given out at interest, and has taken unjust gain: shall he then live? he shall not live: he has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
That has taken away his hand from the poor, that has not received interest nor unjust gain, has executed my judgments, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
And has not oppressed any, but has returned to the debtor his pledge, has plundered none by violence, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;
He that has not given out at interest, neither has taken any unjust gain, that has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true judgment between man and man,
In you have they taken bribes to shed blood; you have taken interest and unjust gain, and you have greedily gained from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten me, says the Lord GOD.
If there be among you a poor man of one of your people within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother:
You shall certainly deliver to him the pledge again when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own clothing, and bless you: and it shall be righteousness to you before the LORD your God.
