And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.

Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in unto the king, she asked for nothing but what Hegai the king’s officer, the keeper of the women, appointed. Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless has not eaten thereof;

(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)
