Deuteronomy 20:19

When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:

And you shall strike every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land every man dropped his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof; however the stone slingers went around it, and struck it.

For thus has the LORD of hosts said, Cut down trees, and build a siege mound against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is given over to oppression in the midst of her.

And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing on it, but leaves only, and said to it, Let no fruit grow on you from now on for ever. And soon after the fig tree withered away.

And now also the axe is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.

That they do not teach you to do according to all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so would you sin against the LORD your God.

Only the trees which you know that they be not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it be subdued.

And the Egyptians treated us evil, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard labor:
