When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman.
Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
Then the chief captain came, and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? He said, Yes.
Then immediately those who would have examined him departed from him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
This man was taken by the Jews, and would have been killed by them: then I came with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.
