Now when the centurion, and those who were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
But Paul said to them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have put us in prison; and now do they thrust us out privately? Certainly not; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before he who is accused meets the accusers face to face, and has liberty to answer for himself concerning the crime held against him.
And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band.
But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that those who could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
