But the king spared Mephi-bosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
And David said to him, Fear not: for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your father; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.
But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at your table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom your brother.
Your own friend, and your father’s friend, do not forsake; neither go into your brother’s house in the day of your calamity: for better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off.
And whoever shall give one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.
And the King shall answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, To the extent that you have done it to one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it unto me.
And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, seeing that we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and you, and between my descendents and your descendents for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
