Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? Do you not know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, before you tell the people to return from following their brethren?

Then David said to the messenger, Thus shall you say to Joab, Let not this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another: make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage him.

And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of a hill.

And Joab said, As God lives, unless you had spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

How long will it be before you make an end of words? take note, and afterwards we will speak.

The beginning of strife is as when one lets out water: therefore leave off contention, before you meddle with it.

But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.

The destroyers have come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the LORD shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.

In vain have I stricken your children; they received no correction: your own sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion.

How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?

For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge himself on his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be filled and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

Declare in Egypt, and announce in Migdol, and announce in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say, Stand fast, and prepare; for the sword shall devour round about you.

And the sword shall remain on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.

And the next day he showed himself to them as they fought, and would have set them at peace again, saying, Sirs, you are brothers; why do you do wrong to one another?
