And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, You shall go no more out with us to battle, that you quench not the light of Israel.

And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came to the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers that were in their hands.

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people had come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and struck them.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the army in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that those that remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
