And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rab-saris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they had come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the field of laundry.

Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, to Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray you, to your servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and do not talk with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spoke, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:

And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and a pint of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.

But Rab-shakeh said, Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you?

The tongue of the sucking child clings to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask for bread, and no man breaks it to them.

Those who fed delicately are desolate in the streets: those who were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

And the LORD said, Even thus shall the children of Israel eat their defiled bread among the Gentiles, where I will drive them.

Then he said to me, Lo, I have given you cow’s dung for man’s dung, and you shall prepare your bread with it.
