Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, to Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray you, to your servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and do not talk with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

Have I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

But Rab-shakeh said to them, Has my master sent me to your master, and to you, to speak these words? has he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you?

Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, Depart, go to this treasurer, even to Shebna, who is over the house, and say,

Then spoke the Chaldeans to the king in Syrian, O king, live for ever: tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.
