And he said to them, You are those who justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
You men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved by God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also know:
But he is a Jew which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.
Therefore judge nothing before the time until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make known the intentions of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise from God.
For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
Now I pray to God that you will do no evil; not that we should appear to be approved, but that you should do that which is honest, though we may seem to be lost.
For we do not commend ourselves again to you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that you may have something to answer those who glory in appearance, and not in heart.
That the testing of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it is tried with fire, may result in praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
