Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
But have done evil more than all that were before you: for you have gone and made yourself other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and have thrust me behind your back:
And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and you are a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made for you for gods.
Have you not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made for yourselves priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of those who are no gods.
And now they sin more and more, and have made themselves molten images from their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
And they shall no longer offer their sacrifices to devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever to them throughout their generations.
For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
