Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all your servants as David, who is the king’s son in law, and goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house?
And the men of Israel said, Have you seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.
Therefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter as wife.
And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me to do an errand, and has said to me, Let no man know anything of the errand on which I send you, and what I have commanded you: and I have assigned my servants to such and such a place.
And Saul said to him, Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the edge of your robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the edge of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it.
I pray you, forgive the trespass of your handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil has not been found in you all your days.
May the LORD return to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the LORD delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth my hand against the LORD’S anointed.
