There was nothing in the ark except the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

And they drew out the poles of the ark, so that the ends of the poles were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen outside. And there it is to this day.
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the army of the Egyptians,
And it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.
Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub, and stood over the threshold of the house; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the LORD’S glory.
And the LORD said to Moses, Speak to Aaron your brother, that he does not come at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; so that he does not die: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.
And the LORD said to Moses, Bring Aaron’s rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and you shall fully take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.
And on the day that the tabernacle was set up the cloud covered the tabernacle, namely, the tent of the testimony: and at evening there was upon the tabernacle what looked like the appearance of fire, until the morning.
Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, in which was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no one was able to enter into the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
