even those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a plague before Yahweh.

A thousand may fall at your side And ten thousand at your right hand, But it shall not approach you.

therefore thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I am about to punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his seed; he will not have anyone living among this people, and he will not see the good that I am about to do to My people,” declares Yahweh, “because he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh.” ’ ”

And fire came out from the presence of Yahweh and consumed them, and they died before Yahweh.

So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land, which we have passed through to spy out on, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size.

I will strike them with pestilence and dispossess them, and I will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they.”

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land.

Fire also came forth from Yahweh and consumed the 250 men who were bringing near the incense.

But those who died by the plague were 14,700, besides those who died on account of Korah.

The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, “If only we had breathed our last when our brothers breathed their last before Yahweh!

And the donkey saw me and turned aside from me these three times. If it had not turned aside from me, I would surely have killed you just now, and let it live.”

So those who died by the plague were 24,000.

Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased. For they were struck down in the wilderness.

And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?

And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient?

Now I want to remind you, though you know all things, that Jesus, having once saved a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe.
