“You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not murder’ and ‘Whoever murders shall be guilty before the court.’
Then she spoke, saying, “Formerly they used to speak in this way, saying, ‘They will surely ask advice at Abel,’ and thus they ended the dispute.
And he appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, in each city.
¶“You shall not murder.
And the cities shall be for you as a refuge from the avenger, so that the manslayer will not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’;
“Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘ You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
“You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your gates of the towns which Yahweh your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.
¶‘You shall not murder.
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
