¶“I was asleep, but my heart was awake. A voice! My beloved was knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my darling, My dove, my perfect one! For my head is full of dew, My locks with the damp of the night.’

“I have taken off my long-sleeved garment, How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet, How can I dirty them again?

“For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It pants toward its end, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come; it will not delay.

But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My master is not coming for a long time,’

“Now after a long time the master of those slaves *came and *settled accounts with them.

but the prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps.

But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’

And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?

And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were wondering at his delay in the sanctuary.

But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master will be a long time in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,

I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find that faith on the earth?”

And He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time.

And do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.

For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”

Be of sober spirit, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come.
