One basket had very good figs, like first-ripe figs, and the other basket had very rotten figs which could not be eaten due to rottenness.

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.

“Who then is the faithful and prudent slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time?

For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them,

but the prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps.

But the prudent answered, saying, ‘No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’

They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they were of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be manifested that they all are not of us.

Now I want to remind you, though you know all things, that Jesus, having once saved a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe.
